It may have started in Japan, but look out…their evil is spreading.īabymetal's sound is something that most fans of heavy metal music in America have not yet been exposed to. But the vocalists are backed by a band of musicians that merge the heavy sounds of Slayer, System of a Down, Slipknot, Ministry and Lamb of God, with traditional pop/dance music with hints of techno and hip hop, skillfully blending the two genres into a cohesive force that leaves many new listeners confused yet curious. From the early days of metal, and Judas Priest's classic 1979 live album Unleashed in the East, recorded in Tokyo, the music has always been popular throughout Asia, with many popular metal and rock bands originating from the continent over the years and recently, including bands like Loudness and X-Japan, Sigh, Cthonic, Crossfaith and tons more established and emerging artists and bands.īut in 2010, a new breed of metal music surfaced, with a group known as Babymetal, a rising trio of famous teenage Japanese female models, this act has a foundation of 'J-Pop,' a fast, upbeat style of pop/dance music, more suitable for clubs playing Britney Spears and other teen idols, than dive bars blasting Pantera and Behemoth. I had never been to the Regency Ballroom, and I don't think I will go back unless they improve some of the things I mentioned.Metal music is a genre of music that transcends all parts of the world, and breaks all cultural and language barriers, from North and South America, to Europe and even Asia. They never played some of my favorite songs as a result. It felt like a health hazard! Not fun to stand around in all night! The show itself was only about an hour and a half, which is short in my opinion, especially since there was no warm up band. It did not help that the ventilation is quite poor-it got very hot and stuffy with all those hundreds of people. They should raise the stage a bit to help with this problem. My girlfriend is only 5'2" tall, and she could not see the band at all. Fortunately, we got in a few minutes before the show started, but the place was very crowded (it was sold out) and difficult to see the stage. First of all, the line to get into the venue (Regency Ballroom) was over three blocks long and it moved very slowly. Although the quality of their actual performance was pretty good, I took issue with a few things that night. I'm a huge fan of BABYMETAL and was looking forward to the show. But to put it shortly, I'll say this: BABYMETAL is coming. I would recommend the BABYMETAL experience to anyone who wants to go on a fox-ride of an adventure, like the one I am experiencing now. The music fusion of J-Pop and Metal, the in-sync-ness of the whole experience, the fans. When I finally got to the floor of both of those theatres, I had a huge adrenaline spike. I completely blew all of my summer's spending money, but to me, nothing was more worth the money than to see those girls and Kami-Band in the live performance. I then asked myself a question: "It would TOTALLY be worth it to go to one of these, right?" I then begged my relative who lives abroad to let me go to the BABYMETAL birthday celebration of YUI-METAL in Paris, and later MOA-METAL's in Cologne. I am glad I am not the only stalker on the Internet. I then continued to watch their lives on YouTube (most in horrible quality), reviews, and dance covers made by other fans. I was watching their music videos day and night, (in a non-creepy way, considering SU-METAL is older than me by a lot) and then I was compelled to learn Japanese, which in my mind is serious dedication. I was referred to their YouTube channel by a friend. Here is a riddle for you all to consider: What is cute as a basket of puppies, addictive as a bag of chocolates, and as entertaining as a Chinese finger trap (maybe even more).
